A Colorful and Fun Treat

I remember when Cookie Monster was my son’s favorite Sesame Street character growing up, and as an adult, I think I’ve taken his love for cookies to heart. That’s why these Cookie Monster Cookies are one of my favorite recipes to make! They’re packed with everything you could ever want in a cookie: chocolate chips, crushed cookies, candy pieces, and an eye-catching blue hue that’s just as fun to eat as it is to look at.

These cookies are soft, chewy, and loaded with texture and flavor in every bite. Whether you’re baking them for a party, a bake sale, or just to channel your inner Cookie Monster, these cookies are sure to be a hit. Let me show you how I make them!

Why I Love This Recipe

These Cookie Monster Cookies are not only delicious but also so much fun to make! The bright blue dough, the mix-ins, and the whimsical look of the finished cookies always bring a smile to my face. They’re perfect for parties, kid-friendly baking projects, or just indulging in a playful treat that brings out your inner Cookie Monster.

What Ingredients You’ll Need

For the cookies:

  • All-purpose flour (for structure)
  • Baking soda and baking powder (to help the cookies rise)
  • Butter (softened, for a rich and chewy texture)
  • Brown sugar and granulated sugar (for sweetness and moisture)
  • Eggs (to bind the dough)
  • Vanilla extract (to enhance the flavor)
  • Blue food coloring (to achieve that signature Cookie Monster color)

For the mix-ins:

  • Chocolate chips (for melty chocolate goodness)
  • Crushed chocolate sandwich cookies (like Oreos, for crunch)
  • Candy-coated chocolates (for pops of color and sweetness)

Optional toppings: More crushed cookies or candy pieces to press into the dough before baking for an extra decorative touch and eyes to really get the full effect of the Cookie Monster.

How I Make Cookie Monster Cookies

  1. Prepare the dough:
    • I start by creaming the butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Then, I mix in the eggs, vanilla extract, and blue food coloring until the dough is evenly tinted. (This part is so fun!)
  2. Combine the dry ingredients:
    • In a separate bowl, I whisk together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Gradually, I mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until a soft dough forms.
  3. Add the mix-ins:
    • This is my favorite part—I fold in the chocolate chips, crushed cookies, and candy pieces, making sure every bite will be packed with goodness.
  4. Scoop and bake:
    • Using a cookie scoop, I portion out the dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Before baking, I press a few extra candy pieces or crushed cookies on top for decoration. After about 10–12 minutes in the oven, the cookies are done when the edges are set, but the centers are still soft.
  5. Cool and enjoy:
    • Once the cookies are out of the oven, I let them cool for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Then, they’re ready to devour!

Pro Tips for Perfect Cookie Monster Cookies

  1. Use Gel Food Coloring:
    • Gel food coloring gives a more vibrant color without thinning the dough. I use Ann Clark’s Royal Blue
  2. Crush Cookies Gently:
    • Leave some larger chunks of crushed sandwich cookies for added texture.
  3. Chill the Dough:
    • Chilling the dough not only helps the cookies hold their shape but also deepens the flavor.
  4. Decorate Before Baking:
    • Press extra candy pieces or crushed cookies onto the tops of the cookies before baking for a professional-looking finish.
  5. Serve Fresh for the Best Texture:
    • These cookies are at their absolute best when served slightly warm, with the chocolate chips still gooey.

Storage Information

  • At room temperature: Store the cookies in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Add a slice of bread to the container to keep them soft.
  • In the refrigerator: Keep the cookies in a sealed container for up to 1 week. Let them come to room temperature before serving.
  • In the freezer: Freeze the cookie dough in scooped portions or the baked cookies for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature or bake the frozen dough directly, adding a couple of minutes to the baking time.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking sheet.

  1. Combine the dry ingredients. flour, salt, baking soda, and corn starch in a small bowl. Stir to combine. Set Aside

  1. Beat the butter with the brown and granulated sugar on medium speed until well combined, about 2-3 minutes, until creamy. Next, add the eggs and vanilla extract and continue beating until well incorporated. Add one teaspoon of royal blue gel icing and two drops of light blue gel icing and beat until incorporated; scrape down the bowl to fully incorporate.

  1. Add the dry ingredients slowly to the dough, mixing on low speed until the dough starts to form. Before the dough thickens, add the chocolate chips, beating until incorporated.

  1. Roughly Chop 15 Chip Ahoy mini cookies into quarters, and add to the dough with one heaping cup of Mini Oreos (do not chop). Use a spatula to incorporate into the dough or clean hands.

  1. Separately, combine 6 Chips Ahoy Minis with ½ cup mini Oreos and crush into a fine crumb in a Ziploc bag or food processor. Set aside.

  1. Portion out ¼ cups of cookie dough (about 3oz each). Roll each ball into a ball and then roll it in the crushed cookie crumbs on the top and sides.

  1. Place the cookies 3 inches apart on the prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 12-14 minutes. The center of the cookie should be slightly underbaked, but the top should not be too gooey or shiny. Once out of the oven, immediately place the candy eyeballs on top. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 15 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
